WP7 - Survey among secondary school pupils

Coordination: Technische Universitat Darmstadt, Germany

 The German technical university Technische Universitat Darmstadt will coordinate this work package in cooperation with other partners.

This part of the project is challenging because it demands careful sampling based on which international comparisons are made. The partner who will be coordinating this work package has experiences in school and youth surveys and the necessary methodological knowledge for performing the coordination.

The target population will be 15 year-old pupils with an effective sample size of 1,000 pupils. The survey will be performed on all secondary education levels which will enable comparisons between different programmes. European and national documentation on lifelong learning strategies, European and national goals related to the VET and working life, and the focus groups findings will serve as the basis for questionnaire development. The indicators taken from the national and international documentation and the focus groups findings will be measured on scales and quantified. The questionnaire will consist of two modules: the first a core module which will be the same for all countries; the second a national module including some additional country-specific questions.

The country-specific questions will be analysed by each partner and the core module, based on a joint data set, will be used for comparative analyses.

Context information (WP 4, WP 5) will be used to determine the specifics of the countries involved.

The survey will focus mainly on the following issues:

  • Motivation to enrol in vocational or higher education courses;
  • Perceptions of the status of vocational graduates;
  • Perceptions of social (in)equality with respect to people with different secondary education profiles;
  • Understanding of the Bologna process features and a comparison of the pupils' perceptions, intentions, and actions towards their realisation;
  • Identification of misunderstandings related to the role of vocational education;
  • Perceptions, intentions, and attitudes of the pupils with regard to pursuing their education and professional career in other EU countries;
  • The pupils’ perceptions regarding the attractiveness, the advantages and the disadvantages of vocational education and its underpinning systems;
  • Use of the ICT in education;
  • Ways of removing barriers to and improving the pursuit of vocational education.

The survey will be conducted online.

7.1 Sampling plan and procedure

To ensure the comparability of the results between the countries, appropriate sampling must be applied. The sampling strategies will be country-specific; however, a random selection of the elements (either one-stage or two-stage sampling) should be applied. The minimum effective sample size will be 1,000 units, the proposed maximum design effect is DEFF=2.5. The sampling plan will be implemented in all participating countries during the sampling procedure.

7.2 Development of the questionnaire

The questionnaire will be developed in close cooperation between all partners. The theoretical backgrounds (EU and national strategies) and the focus groups findings will serve as a foundation in the development of the questionnaire. The latter will consist of two core modules: an international module which will be the same for all participating countries and will allow international comparisons and a national module which may include country-specific questions. The international module will be obligatory for all participating countries.

7.3 Web survey

The Web survey will be implemented in all participating countries. A Web survey software enables the design of multilingual surveys conducted across Europe and is more cost-effective than the paper-and-pencil survey. To access the survey the participants will be given access codes.

7.4 International database

One of the WP 7 products will be a publicly accessible international database with the corresponding documentation (questionnaires, technical information, sampling information) based on which anyone interested will be able to perform secondary analyses. The international database will be published on the web page and publicly after the publication of the final report.

7.5 Country reports on the pupils data

The country reports will include analyses based on the international and national modules. The report on the national results will serve as the basis for the final dissemination material.

7.6 Cross-national results based on the pupils data

The report will include analyses based on the international module. Comparative analyses will be performed for six countries; the context information on educational systems (WP 4 WP 5) will be used.

A multilevel analysis including context information for each country will also be implemented in order to determine the properties of the countries involved.
